The distinctive bright red helicopter of the London Air Ambulance HEMS (Helicopter Emergency Medical Service) is a welcome site at the scene of emergencies.  HEMS provide an invaluable service responding to major trauma incidents across the city where time is critical to the patient’s survival.

 

The helicopter carries an on-board doctor trained in pre-hospital trauma care as well as a paramedic and can reach anywhere in the area bounded by the M25 within 12 minutes flying time. Since 1989 the Air Ambulance team have flown over 20 000 missions.

 

Contrary to common belief, this crucial service is not fully funded by Virgin nor the Government.  The annual cost of providing this priceless service is £1.85Million. The London Air Ambulance are on call 365 days a year.

 

London’s Air Ambulance is a  registered charity and relies heavily on outside and private funding and donations to keep the service running.
